WPL 2024 – How do Mumbai Indians, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Delhi Capitals, Gujarat Giants and UP Warriorz look? – LSB

6 Min Read

Uncapped Indian fast bowler Kashfi Gautam (Gujarat Giants) and Australian pacer Annabel Sutherland (Delhi Capitals) attracted the joint highest bids of INR 2 Crore (US$ 240,000 approx) in the auction ahead of the second edition of the Women’s Premier League (WPL). Another uncapped Indian player, batsman Vrinda Dinesh, who played for India A against England A, has been named by UP Warriorz as the second most expensive buy.

Importantly, all 30 slots, including nine away, have been filled and here’s how the five WPL teams look at the end.

delhi capitals

Band strength: 18 (6 outside)
Players bought: Annabelle Sutherland (INR 2 Crores), Aparna Mondal (INR 10 Lakhs), Ashwani Kumari (INR 10 Lakhs)
Auction performance: Even before the inaugural WPL tournament, the Capitals had a very strong team. The only notable flaw was the presence of backup wicketkeeper for Tania Bhatia. They released wicket-keeper Aparna Mondal, whom they brought back at base price. Not selecting Uma Chhetri, the Assam player who can score quickly, could be a missed opportunity.

Capitals have managed to land Australian all-rounder Annabel Sutherland after an intense bidding war with Mumbai Indians, which can be considered a win. She is a reliable option should Marizan Kapp need a rest, and in any case, she is a solid all-round option in the team.

Full band: Alice Kapse*, Arundhati Reddy, Jemima Rodriguez, Jess Jonassen*, Laura Harris*, Marizan Kapp*, Meg Lanning*, Meenu Mani, Poonam Yadav, Radha Yadav, Shafali Verma, Shikha Pandey, Sneha Deepthi, Tanya Bhatia, Titas Sadhu . , Annabelle Sutherland*, Aparna Mondal, Ashwani Kumari

Gujarat Giants

Band strength: 18 (6 outside)
Players bought: Phoebe Litchfield (INR 1 Crore), Meghna Singh (INR 30 Lakhs), Trisha Poojitha (INR 10 Lakhs), Kashvi Gautam (INR 2 Crores), Priya Mishra (INR 20 Lakhs), Lauren Chettle (INR 30 Lakhs) INR 1,000), Catherine Price (INR 10,000), Mannat Kashyap (INR 10,000), Veda Krishnamurthy (INR 30,000), Taranum Pathan (INR 10,000)
Auction performance: The Giants will be satisfied with how their team looks on paper – all-rounder options plus a gun batsman and a fast bowler in Kashvee Gautam. Their choice of Phoebe Litchfield over Chamari Athapaththu reflects their concerns for WPL 2023 and an attempt to rectify that with a strong player.

The selection of Scottish player Katherine Price, an assistant player, gives them the opportunity to play with five foreign players in the starting lineup. The return of Veda Krishnamurthy was a surprise, as it gave them experience in the middle order.

Full band: Ashley Gardner*, Beth Mooney*, Dayalan Hemalatha, Harleen Deol, Laura Wolfhardt*, Shabnam Shakeel, Sneh Rana, Tanya Kanwar, Phoebe Litchfield*, Meghna Singh, Trisha Poojitha, Kashvi Gautam, Priya Mishra, Lauren Chettle*, Katherine Price * Mannat Kashyap, Veda Krishnamurthy, Taranum Pathan

Mumbai Indians

Band strength: 18 (6 outside)
Players bought: Shabnim Ismail (INR 1.2 Crore), S Sajjana (INR 15 lakh), Amandeep Kaur (INR 10 lakh), Fatima Jaffer (INR 10 lakh), Keerthana Balakrishnan (INR 10 lakh)
Auction performance: Mumbai did their best to bring in Shabnim Ismail, most likely as a backup to Essie Wong. They also wanted a big ticket, but lost Sutherland to the Capitals.

Wrist spinner Amandeep Kaur adds an element of surprise, given that there are not many like her in the women’s circuit. Mumbai have already added a strong title-winning side, more bowling options in Fatima Jaffer and Keerthana Balakrishnan.

Full band: Amanjot Kaur, Amelia Kerr*, Chloe Tryon*, Harmanpreet Kaur, Hayley Matthews*, Humaira Kazi, Essie Wong*, Gentimani Kalita, Nat Schaeffer-Brunt*, Pooja Vastrakar, Priyanka Bhalla, Saika Ishak, Yastika Bhatia, Shabnim Ismail* , S. Sajjana, Amandeep Kaur, Fatima Jaffer, Keerthana Balakrishnan

Royal Challengers Bangalore

Band strength: 18 (6 outside)
Players bought: Georgia Wareham (INR 40,000), Kate Cross (INR 30,000), Ekta Bisht (INR 60,000), Shobha Satish (INR 10,000), S Meghana (INR 30,000), Simran Bahadur (30 1000 Indian rupees), Sophie Molyneux (30 thousand Indian rupees)
Auction performance: Georgia Wareham is the epitome of Dane van Niekerk – a leg-spinner who can have great success in the lower middle order. After the release of Megan Schutt, Kate Cross has become a safe option for RCB with all her experience of playing in India.

With Ekta Bisht and Sophie Molineux in the mix, RCB’s desire to have a reliable left-arm spinner – in place of Preeti Bose and Sahana Pawar – has been fulfilled.

Full band: Asha Shobana, Disha Cassatt, Elise Perry*, Heather Knight*, Indrani Roy, Kanika Ahuja, Renuka Singh, Richa Ghosh, Shreyanka Patel, Smriti Mandhana, Sophie Devine*, Georgia Wareham*, Kate Cross*, Ekta Bisht, Shobha Satish , S. Meghana, Simran Bahadur, Sophie Molyneux*
