Vangaveeti Mohana Ranga Rao was a prominent politician from the Indian National Congress party in Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh. He was born on July 4, 1947, in Katuru, Vuyyuru, Krishna district, Andhra Pradesh, India. Ranga had four older brothers named Vangaveeti Koteswara Rao, Vangaveeti Venkata Narayana Rao, Vangaveeti Sobhana Chalapathi Rao, and Vangaveeti Radha Krishna. Ranga was happily married to Rathna Kumari, and they had a son named Vangaveeti Radha Krishna and a daughter named Asha.
Tragedy struck the family when Vangaveeti Radha was killed by members of the Communist party. Following this unfortunate event, Vangaveeti Ranga stepped forward to carry on his brother’s legacy and took charge of the responsibilities entrusted to him.

Ranga, being the youngest among his four older brothers, experienced a heartbreaking loss when his brother Vangaveeti Radha Krishna Rao Sr was tragically murdered in 1974. He tied the knot with Chennupati Ratna Kumari and named his son Radha Krishna Rao Jr after his late elder brother. Additionally, Ranga had a daughter named Asha. Vangaveeti Ranga embarked on his political journey following the tragic demise of his brother, Vangaveeti Radha Krishna. In 1981, he made his foray into public life by contesting in the municipal elections. The Congress Party withdrew its official candidate and threw its support behind Ranga. Meanwhile, his rival, Devineni Rajasekhar, received sponsorship from the Telugu Desam Party (TDP), which had strong ties to the Kamma caste. Ranga, on the other hand, emerged as a leader representing the Kapu community.
In 1985, Ranga became a member of the Congress Party, while Rajasekhar secured a seat as a TDP MLA and eventually became a minister. The rivalry between the two parties escalated into gang warfare starting in 1983, fueled by deep-seated caste divisions. The then Chief Minister of Andhra , N. T. Rama Rao, belonged to the Kamma caste, further intensifying the animosity. However, the gang warfare in Vijayawada had roots that extended back even further.
Ranga had previously served a prison sentence for the murder of Rajasekhar’s brother, Gandhi. The situation escalated on March 10, 1988, when Rajasekhar’s brother Murali was killed, leading to charges against Ranga’s supporters.
