Kristen, 51, spoke with her siblings about the details of her 2021 split from Kody, 54, during the Sunday, November 19, episode of the TLC series, explaining that she was financially independent when they called it quits.
“Cody and I talked about what to do with the property and my house before I left. So I was like, ‘Why don’t I keep all the money from the proceeds from the sale of my house and then I’ll give the property back to the family?'” she said, referring to their land on Coyote Pass in Arizona. Financially, it would have been very easy for me to leave.”

But Janelle’s situation is a little more complicated. “I think that’s the biggest reason Janelle stayed with Kody because she didn’t have anything to her name,” Kristen said. “And the [Coyote Pass] Property, Cody’s name is on every piece of property.
In a confessional of her own, Janelle, 54, said she felt stuck financially because the family land had not yet been paid off – and no one had started building as planned.
“I’m stuck here with nothing free and clear to my name,” Janelle admitted in a confessional interview. “I co-owned these lots with other family members.”
Meanwhile, Cody argued in the episode that Janelle wasn’t the only one who had trouble with Coyote Pass.
“We all have the same problem that Janelle does, which is that our assets are all combined,” Kody admitted.
Janelle confirmed in December 2022 that she and Cody had been “separated for several months.” The tension between them was front and center throughout Season 18 of Sister Wives, as an intense fight broke out on camera.
While a lack of income and financial stability played a role in keeping her with Kody, Janelle cited her faith as a deterrent as well.
“I don’t know, like, life’s short,” Janelle told Kristen and her siblings on Sunday’s episode, noting, “We grew up in a culture where marriage is forever. It’s been hard to juggle both things.”

She later admitted that some of her and Cody’s six children “wondered if I had really left their father” because she wasn’t “moving on” with someone new. Janelle explained that her reluctance to leave Kodi entirely had to do with not knowing “how to reconcile my faith with where I am now in my life.”
