Afghanistan will continue to lack the services of T20I captain Rashid Khan as he recovers from back surgery and is therefore not included in the 16-member squad for the upcoming three-match T20I series against Sri Lanka.
Mujibur Rahman, who, according to an ACB statement, suffered a “sprain in his right phalanx (hand)” before the start of the ODI series against Sri Lanka, has also been ruled out. Fast bowler Mohamed Saleem, who has failed to recover from a hamstring injury, is also missing.
Afghanistan made four changes to the team that faced India in the T20I series last month. While Mujib and Saleem were out injured, Afghanistan dropped wicketkeeper-batsman Ikram Alikhel and top-order batsman Rahmat Shah.
Mohammad Ishaq, the wicket-keeper-batsman who was also named in the squad for the one-off Test against Sri Lanka, has received a call-up to the T20I squad. In addition, fast bowler Vadar Momand has been recalled in place of Salim.

Mujib played two T20Is against India, then featured for the Gulf Giants in the ILT20 before traveling to Sri Lanka for the ODI series, where he suffered an injury. On the other hand, Saleem played the third T20I against India and the only Test against Sri Lanka but was left out of the ODI squad due to a hamstring injury.

Meanwhile, Rashid has not played competitive cricket since the ODI World Cup in November. He withdrew from the BBL that season and subsequently underwent back surgery and was later ruled out of the SA20 as well.
Recently, Rasheed also pulled out of the upcoming PSL tournament as he continues his rehabilitation. Rashid was originally part of the series against India but was dropped even before the T20Is began, despite traveling with the team throughout.
In Rashid’s absence, Ibrahim Zadran will continue to captain the T20I side, as he did against both India and UAE. Gurbaz will be at the top of the pecking order, followed by the likes of Najibullah Zadran, Mohammad Nabi, Hazratullah Zazai and Azmatullah Omarzai. Fazlul Haq Faruqi will lead the fast bowling attack that also includes Naveen ul Haq, Fareed Ahmed and Momand. Noor Ahmed and Qais Ahmed, along with Sharafuddin Ashraf, will form a young bowling unit.

Afghanistan has not had a good time in Sri Lanka so far. They lost the only Test by ten wickets, and are currently 0-2 down in the three-match ODI series. The T20I series begins on February 17, while the second and third matches will be held on February 19 and 21, respectively. All matches will be played in Dambulla.

Afghanistan squad: Ibrahim Zadran (capt), Rahmanullah Gurbaz (wk), Mohammad Ishaq (wk), Hazratullah Zazai, Gulbadin Naib, Mohammad Nabi, Najibullah Zadran, Azmatullah Omarzai, Karim Janat, Sharafuddin Ashraf, Fazalhaq Farooqi, Fareed Ahmad, Naveen-ul- Haq, Noor Ahmad, Wafadar Momand and Qais Ahmad
