Hardik Pandya will captain Mumbai Indians in IPL 2024, succeeding Rohit Sharma, who has led the team through a decade of sensational heights. Rohit, who has led Mumbai to five IPL titles, is the most successful captain in the tournament’s history alongside Chennai Super Kings’ MS Dhoni.
The leadership change comes less than a month after Mumbai brought Hardik back to his parent franchise after he led the Gujarat Titans to the title and second place in successive seasons. Mumbai said it had taken the decision to remain “future-ready”.
“It’s part of building legacy and staying true to MI’s philosophy of being prepared for the future,” Mahela Jayawardene, Mumbai’s global head of performance, said in a statement. “Mumbai Indians have always enjoyed exceptional leadership right from Sachin [Tendulkar] To Harbhajan [Singh] And Reiki [Ponting] To Rohit, who while contributing to the immediate success, was always looking to strengthen the team for the future. In line with this philosophy, Hardik Pandya will captain Mumbai Indians for the IPL 2024 season.

“We are grateful to Rohit Sharma for his exceptional leadership. His tenure as Mumbai Indians captain since 2013 has been nothing short of exceptional. His leadership has not only brought unparalleled success to the team but has also strengthened his position as captain.” One of the best captains in the history of IPL.

“Under his leadership, MI has become one of the most successful and beloved teams of all time. We will look forward to his guidance and experience on and off the field to further strengthen MI. We welcome Hardik Pandya as the new captain of MI and wish him everything. The best of the best.”

In all, Rohit has captained Mumbai 163 times in the ISL and Champions League T20 matches, winning 91 matches, drawing four and losing 68. Under his captaincy, Mumbai have reached the ISL finals five times – in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2020 – and won it all. . who are they. But the last three seasons have been less successful for Mumbai. They failed to reach the playoffs in 2021 and 2022, exiting the 2023 tournament by losing to the Titans in the second playoff.

While the development may come as a surprise to some, Mumbai had a clear plan when they traded Hardik from the Titans. The franchise had identified Hardik as Rohit’s successor and wanted to ensure a smooth transition like in the past, when the captaincy baton passed from Tendulkar to Harbhajan and then Ponting to Rohit.

It is understood that Rohit will continue to play for Mumbai in the Indian Premier League.

It remains to be seen whether Mumbai’s captaincy change is a precursor to a similar shift in the Indian T20I team. Rohit is currently India’s captain in all formats, but has not played a T20I since their semi-final defeat in the 2022 T20 World Cup in Australia. In that time, Hardik has led India in the form he has been available – he has captained them in 13 of the last 25 T20Is – but he is currently out of action due to an ankle injury sustained during the recent ODI World Cup. Suryakumar Yadav – another Mumbai Indians player – captained India in the recently concluded T20I series in South Africa.
