Australia were not the clear favorites ahead of the 2023 ODI World Cup. They started their campaign with two big losses, suffered from injury problems and a number of players who were out of form, and most of their victories in the league stages were not convincing enough. But captain Pat Cummins was pleased his side “saved the best for the final” as they convincingly beat hosts India – unbeaten in the tournament until Sunday – by six wickets in the final to lift the World Cup for the sixth time in history.

“You have to go and win the World Cup,” he said in the post-match show. “You can’t wait for it to happen. I think you have to be brave sometimes, you have to go into the game. And it was a real turnaround after those first two games. With our batting in particular, I saw the openers were really aggressive and pretty much not backed down from That’s for the rest of the tournament.

“I think we saved our best for last. Some big players stood up in the games, and yeah, we’re very happy.”

In the final too, Australia found themselves in trouble when they trailed 47 for 3 and chased down 241. Mohammed Shami removed David Warner for 7 in the second over and Jasprit Bumrah had Mitchell Marsh behind for 15. Soon after, Bumrah got the target off the crucial wicket of Steven Smith. In the 7th round, getting pinned for 4.

It was only then that Travis Head and Marnus Labuschagne combined for a match-winning partnership of 192, not letting India into the game any time onwards.

“I was one of those guys with hearts fluttering upstairs, and I was walking fast [after 47 for 3]”Marnus came in and came out with a calm head straight away. And Trav does what he does – he’s really brave again, getting the game going, putting the pressure back on the bowlers. And to do it on the biggest stage shows a lot of character,” Cummins said.
