It’s been over a decade since the last Grand Theft Auto game came out, so the release date of the GTA 6 trailer on Tuesday, December 5, 2023 was a big deal.

That is, until an anonymous leaker released the trailer for Elon Musk’s X, formerly known as Twitter, a day earlier.

Considering the leaked trailer is making its way around the internet, Rockstar Games clearly felt it forced to release their own official version of the GTA 6 trailer earlier. Now is available for viewing on YouTube.

The X account @Gta6trailerleak seems to have been created specifically for one purpose: leaking the GTA 6 trailer. The video wasn’t long based on screenshots floating around. It looks X stopped account no more than an hour after the leaked trailer was posted.

According to Tom Warren of The Verge, Rockstar have made their official trailer public 10 minutes after X stopped the leaked video uploader.

The leaked video, which we now know is legit, had “BUY $BTC” watermark overlaid on the entire clip.

Musk’s X is no stranger to leaks, piracy, and posting copyrighted content. Ever since X launched extended-length video uploads for paid X Premium subscribers, users have been posting feature films to the platform, apparently without permission from the copyright holder.

X CEO Linda Yaccarino he boasted on Friday about how many platform views Rockstar’s GTA 6 post touting Tuesday’s release date received.

“90+ million views in less than 12 hours,” Yaccarino posted. “I’ll see you on Tuesday!”

But thanks to a leak, GTA 6 fans don’t have to wait until Tuesday.
