Grok, the newest AI chatbot, is officially live on X. And by that, we mean it’s available exclusively to Premium+ members who pay $16 per month for a subscription.

According to the announcement, Grok “loves sarcasm” and is “meant to answer questions with a bit of wit and has a rebellious streak.” Grok will “answer thorny questions that most other AI systems reject,” was created with “people of all backgrounds and political views” in mind, making it safe to say that Grok is Musk’s answer to his version of free speech.

How did Musk’s vision for Grok turn out? If Musk wanted Grok to be more on board with his point of view, it’s a bit of a mixed bag. Here’s what early users are saying:

Grok also doesn’t seem to align with Musk’s anti-trans rhetoric or X’s content policies, which omit hate speech protections for trans people.

Musk may not vote for Biden in 2024, but Groke would (if he had a vote).

However, Grok is still Musk’s team on the important stuff, like who would win in a face-off between Musk and Zuckerberg.

A new favorite Grok feature is the “Roast Me” prompt, which appropriately took down Congressman Thomas Massey for his outrageously tone-deaf 2021 Christmas card.

Grok is many things, but it was no made with OpenAI code. Grok’s training data inevitably contained ChatGPT outputs, which explains the reference to OpenAI policy in this answer:
