Democrats warn Schumer

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer is receiving warnings from progressive Democrats who fear ongoing negotiations for border policy changes could give way to Republicans.

A small group of bipartisan senators met privately with Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas this week, hoping to find common ground on immigration and border security measures. Republicans insist on linking additional funding for Ukraine and aid to Israel to immigration reform.

Negotiations have not yet reached an agreement, but reports of the proposals have angered many Democrats.

“[Schumer] Democrats considering these proposals must understand that these Trumpian policies will do nothing to address the challenges we face at the border and will only exacerbate the problem. “Immigration advocates must speak up — ‘No’ is the message,” Sen. Bob Menendez, D-N.J., — who faces federal bribery charges — wrote on X on Thursday.
